Suffolk/Essex: War commemorations being held tonight to mark 100th anniversary of outbreak of First World War

Today is the centenary of the British declaration of war with Germany – which sparked four years and three months of conflict in the First World War.


It prompted Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey’s to say: “The lamps are going out across Europe. They shall not be lit again in our lifetime.”

Today there are special events to mark the anniversary across the region – with a national ceremony at Westminster Abbey at 10pm which is being televised live.

Locally the main events are being held in Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds, and Colchester:

6.30pm: Civic Service, Colchester War Memorial.

7.30pm: Parade through the town and “Lights Out” commemoration at the Cenotaph in Christchurch Park, Ipswich.

7:45pm: Commemoration event at Bury St Edmunds’ Cathedral with music and poetry to mark the anniversary of the start of the war.

All have been timed to give participants the chance to get home and watch the national ceremony live.
