Suffolk: Fire service back to normal after day of strike action

10:57 23 June 2014

Archant

Suffolk’s fire service dealt with nine incidents during the latest strike action by firefighters – but reported no injuries or significant issues.

The brigade ran a reduced contingency service from 10am to 5pm on Saturday.

Of the incidents attended, four were automatic alarms going off accidentally in Lakenheath, Ipswich, Felixstowe and Claydon.

Crews also dealt with a car fire in Ipswich, a crash on the A1092, Clare, and two undergrowth fires in Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds.

  • ref R U Kidding in Suffolk there are 24 wholetime staff covering the whole of Suffolk,i think you will find, and they do drills or carry out fire safety work and inspections lectures or paperwork. If you want you can pass on your address and real identity and maybe i can ask a crew to do a drill outside your home at 0300 in the morning and i will be sure to make sure your neighbours are aware we were there at your request!!

  • Okay any of the incidents detailed above warrants an attendance – however if this is the volume of incidents that necessitated the attendance of the Fire Service then it is little wonder that at whatever level – National or Local Government there appears to be capacity for change Let’s not forget many years ago during strike action by the Fire Service the ‘Green Goddesses’ staffed by the army filled the gap and from recollection there was no significant issues – at least in Suffolk It would be interesting to assess the number of staff working nights against the number of calls received by the Fire Service. If there is not a call what do those staff do during the hours they are at work on nights?
