A man has died after being hit by a train in Suffolk, it has been confirmed.

The fatality led to buses replacing trains between Stowmarket, Diss and Norwich for more than four hours until the line was restored at 5pm.

Passengers travelling on the route between Norwich and London were also offered the alternative of travelling via Cambridge.

A spokesman for the British Transport Police (BTP) said the man was pronounced dead at the scene and officers are now working to identify him.

He said the incident was not being treated as suspicious.

In a statement, he said: “We were called to a crossing close to Cow Green in Bacton, Stowmarket, Suffolk, on Wednesday, July 9, after a report that a man had been struck by a train.

“Officers from BTP and Suffolk police attended the incident, reported to us at 1.14pm, and it is currently being treated as non-suspicious.

“Paramedics from the East of England Ambulance Service also attended, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Officers are now working to establish the identity of the man.

“A file will be prepared for the coroner.”
