A building site where four men died was not the responsibility of Great Yarmouth firm Claxton Engineering, an inquest heard today.

West Suffolk men Daniel Hazelton, 30, Thomas Hazelton, 26, Adam Taylor, 28 and Peter Johnson, 42, died in January 2011 after a steel cage they were working in collapsed.

They had been constructing a reinforced concrete base as part of a £1.5m pressure test facility at Claxton Engineering, North River Road, Great Yarmouth.

But Ian Thynne, a former health and safety manager at Claxton, said responsibility for the building site had been handed over to principal contractors Encompass.

Speaking on the second day of a jury inquest at Sprowston Manor, near Norwich, he said he believed builders Encompass had filled out documents relating to industry safety regulations.

Julia Kendrick, for Encompass, said Mr Thynne should have ensured a co-ordinator was appointed to ensure CDM regulations were met.

She added he had neglected to do this, and handing over the site to Encompass was not sufficient.

The inquest, heard before an 11-strong jury and senior coroner Jacqueline Lake, continues.
