Suffolk: Sporting champions Beth Tweddle, Claire Harvey and Rachel Latham head to county for Games relay

A trio of stars from international athletics will join six Suffolk sporting heroes as the Queen’s Baton visits the county.

With a week to go until the Commonwealth Games relay reaches our region, organisers have revealed the three ambassadors who will attend special sporting events along the route.

Olympic bronze medal gymnast Beth Tweddle will accompany record-holding Paralympic swimmer Rachael Latham and London 2012 women’s sitting volleyball captain Claire Harvey for the celebrations next Monday.

Suffolk is the only county in East Anglia to host the baton on its tour of England before crossing the border to Scotland at the end of June.

It will start in Lowestoft before moving to Newmarket and Bury St Edmunds, finishing the day in Ipswich.

The three athletes will attend events for young people at Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre and Northgate Sports Centre - with Tweddle and Latham joining the grand finale in Ipswich’s Christchurch Park in the evening.

Six of Suffolk’s sporting stars, including boxer Anthony Ogogo and handballer Louise Jukes, have been selected as baton bearers for the day.

Alan Murray, Suffolk County Council’s health chief, encouraged to join in the celebration and get behind our athletes as they make their way to Glasgow for the Games. He said: “Anticipation is really beginning to build as we get closer and closer to Queen’s Baton arriving here so it is with genuine excitement that we are announcing that Beth, Racheal and Claire will be joining Suffolk’s celebrations.”

The Queen’s Baton will cover some 120 miles and be seen by an estimated 10,000 people as it visits Suffolk.

A free community and school run will be led along Lowestoft seafront by Olympic bronze medalist Anthony Ogogo.

Hundreds of Newmarket schoolchildren will then join in a mass participation sporting event as the baton is carried by jockey Ryan Moore.

In Bury St Edmunds, an athletics competition will be held for up to 400 disabled and non-disabled children.

More competitions are planned for 700 Ipswich youngsters at Northgate Sports Centre.

The finale takes place with a free event in Christchurch Park, involving pyrotechnics, music, a sports village and a mass run around the park using coloured powder to create a visual spectacle.

The 20th Commonwealth Games takes place in Glasgow from July 23 to August 3.
