The 19-year-old was the only person in a car which left the Hollesley Road near Rock Barracks in Sutton early on Saturday morning.

The blue Vauxhall Zafira hit a tree shortly before 3am and emergency services were called to the aftermath of the accident. They were helped by a doctor from the Suffolk Accident Rescue Service.

He was originally taken to Ipswich Hospital, but was later transferred to Addenbrookes after suffering what are described as “life-threatening” injuries by SARS.

Fire crews were called, but other emergency services had managed to remove the driver from the car before they arrived.

The road was closed for more than six hours until the car was recovered and police were able to carry out investigations in early daylight. It eventually reopened shortly before 10am.

  • I've been a driver for many years including commercially and I can tell you that the worst drivers I have seen are the middle aged middle lane-hoggers and the sales reptiles. Young drivers do have accidents, but in my experience they are no worse a driver than those who are so set in their ways, possibly myopic as well as terminally distracted by children, grandchildren or the lapdog!

  • Your obviously bitter about your age newsmaster. Do you ever spot trains? "Ooh look at that big funnel!" Were you not a young driver once? If you were I bet you were a real bundle of joy for your female passengers! Mind the gap now.
