A landlady is looking forward to raising a deserved glass after of a month on the wagon.
Marie Smith, of the Sweffling White Horse, near Saxmundham, gave up drinking for October to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Care, despite her favourite drink being real ale and running a pub which specialises in local draught beers.
Luckily for her, the White Horse has launched a range of ‘Nilcoholic’ beverages.
Marie, who runs the pub with Mark, said: “Lots of people drive to the pub these days, and also some simply don’t drink alcohol because of health or other reasons. It’s important to give these people a choice of drinks so they can enjoy the community spirit of a pub without feeling left out.”
Some time ago, the pub coined the phrase ‘Sweffling Shandy’ to describe a shandy made with sparkling mineral water, allowing the flavour of the ale to come through while still reducing the alcohol. It proved popular, so they went a step further for those not wishing to drink alcohol at all.
