Farmworkers helped firefighters deal with a 250-tonne wheat and barley straw stack on fire at Thurston.

One crew from Bury St Edmunds attended the incident on open ground in Hollow Lane at 2.37am today.

The straw stack was close to a muck manure stack. The crew worked to establish a break between the two stacks, while farm staff assisted.

The incident was brought under control by 4.06am.

The fire is believed to have been started accidentally.
