More than 1,500 fans watched Bury Town secure the Zamaretto League Midland Division at Ram Meadow at the weekend.

The promotion coincides with confirmation that a site for a new ground at Moreton Hall has been identified and the club should be kicking off the 2012 season from the new stadium.

It has now emerged that David Nettleton, chairman of Bury St Edmunds Town Council, is to discuss the idea of celebrating the club’s success with his fellow councillors.

One possibility is to arrange a team parade through the town on an open-top bus. Mr Nettleton said: “I am happy to have it discussed at the May meeting of the council and if members agree then I would be happy to put it forward.”

Club chairman Russell Ward said: “We had not planned to approach anybody. We think it is quite an achievement, especially since it is on the back of two good FA Cup runs.

“This year’s success is the outcome of something that has been steadily building during the past few years and obviously if anybody wants to do something to recognise that we would be delighted.”

St Edmundsbury Borough Council will be sending a letter of congratulations to the team, which is the fourth oldest non-league team in the country.

A spokeswoman for the council said: “We are sending a letter of congratulations and we are looking forward to continuing to work closely with the club on their plans for the future”
