Trimley: Talks set to take place over cash for station community hub idea

Trimley station - efforts to save it are progressing well.

CAMPAIGNERS trying to save a village railway station from the bulldozers are to be invited to meet parish councillors to discuss their ideas for creating a new community hub.

Trimley St Mary Parish Council wants to meet the Trimley Station Community Trust before giving a commitment for financial support.

When setting last year’s budget councillors were told £5,000 might be required to help with initial costs of the project.

The trust is trying to raise £250,000 to turn the 121-year-old Victorian station and brake goods store – the last surviving Great Eastern country station – on the Ipswich to Felixstowe line into a cafe, information centre, offices and meeting room.

It has been given a two-year lease on the building while it finalises its plans.

It has also secured a “substantial sum” towards the project from the Railway Heritage Trust.

  • There must be better reasons for people to go to this place. Cafe, information centre, offices and meeting room are not going to attract sufficient people to make a go of it. If it were to become a village shop cum post office, that would be a better start. Add a licence for entertainment and alcohol, and then you start to have an offering which would appeal. Then think of pool tables, table tennis tables, dance floor etc, and you might have a chance of getting the good burghers of Trimley to venture out. Otherwise, folks, it's going to be a boring, council-run, place to put brochures in and make tuppence a cup on coffee if and when people go there. Ask the advice of people in the entertainment, retail and hospitality business - don't listen to councillors, unless they have appropriate business experience.

  • Too remote for a tea room, and it will take money away from the memorial hall
