Villagers from the twin Trimley communities are today joining together for two days of fun as they celebrate with their annual carnival.

It is the 45th Trimley Carnival and this year it is bigger and better than ever, held over two days for the first time.

With the World Cup in Brazil reaching its climax, the organising committee have changed the theme – with people encouraged to mark Countries of the World Cup.

Originally it had been thought that this year was the 50th carnival.

Carnival chairman Sharon Iannuzzi said: “Carnival plans for a golden anniversary were in full swing following information from local residents. However leading up to our open day we were approached by members of the public with conflicting dates.”

A newspaper cutting taken along to a carnival open day event eventually solved the problem – confirming that it was indeed the 45th event this year.

Events get under way today at 1pm when the procession of colourfully-decorated floats, majorettes and other entries sets off from Faulkeners Way, Trimley St Mary, to make its way along the High Road to Trimley St Martin.

The parade – which will be heading for the Trimley Sports and Social Club, the venue for the weekend’s events – is expected to be one of the longest for some years with local clubs and groups vying for the best-dressed float title.

From 2.30pm onwards there will be various displays in the grand ring, including Felixstowe Karate Club and majorette troupes, plus music, crafts,

charity and trade stalls, barbecue and refreshments, and a funfair.

Tomorrow’s events will start at 10am when the social club gates open, and will include an It’s a Knock-out tournament, car boot sale, a display by the Poloz Majorettes, a demonstration by free-running group Escape Reality, and a performance by the Felixstowe Community Choir, plus whacky games and races involving a 75ft inflatable and lots of water, craft and charity stalls, children’s rides and refreshments.

  • Surprise. The England team's themed float stalled and didn't make it out of Faulkeners Way
