Emergency services were at the scene of a crash on the A12 which blocked the road in the London-bound direction.

Police were called to the road near Stanway at 5pm after a lorry had collided with two vehicles. But earlier reports had told of several cars being involved.

A force spokeswoman had advised motorists to avoid the road. Two lanes were closed with congestion going back some five miles.

An ambulance spokeswoman said: “We were called at 4.59pm to the collision. Two people in a car – a man and a baby girl – were both assessed and taken to Colchester General Hospital with minor injuries and further assessment.”

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said its crews rescued one person trapped in a car following the crash.

  • Have seen it so many times on this stretch of A12, drivers travelling not only too fast and far too close but also just joining the A`12 without adjusting speed to filter into flow of traffic. Often motorists just pull straight out into the stream of traffic and drive at matching sppeds alongside vehicles that cannot get out of the way or otherwise avoid them. It is all just selfishness and ignorance.
