Emergency services were at the scene of a crash on the A12 which blocked the road in the London-bound direction.
Police were called to the road near Stanway at 5pm after a lorry had collided with two vehicles. But earlier reports had told of several cars being involved.
A force spokeswoman had advised motorists to avoid the road. Two lanes were closed with congestion going back some five miles.
An ambulance spokeswoman said: “We were called at 4.59pm to the collision. Two people in a car – a man and a baby girl – were both assessed and taken to Colchester General Hospital with minor injuries and further assessment.”
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said its crews rescued one person trapped in a car following the crash.
