Two women suffered serious injuries in a six-vehicle collision that forced the closure of a busy road near Chelmsford.

All emergency services and an air ambulance were called to the accident, which happened at about 7.25am on the northbound carriageway of the A1114 Great Baddow bypass.

Firefighters cut a woman free from the wreckage of one of the vehicles.

One lane northbound reopened shortly before 9am and the second lane was expected to be clear by about 10.15am.

The southbound carriageway was closed for a short time while the air ambulance was in attendance.

Any witnesses who have not yet contacted police, or anyone with information about events leading to the collision, should contact the investigating officer Pc Fiona Rayner at Chelmsford road policing office on 101.
