A section of a Lowestoft road is expected to be closed off to traffic tonight and in to tomorrow morning after a hole appeared on it.

Denmark Road, which leads on to the A12 in the town centre, was sealed off by the Highways Agency after the hole, which was 200mm deep and five metres long, was discovered on Monday.

Yesterday workmen spent the day trying to find the cause of the hole’s appearance, which came more than two months after the tidal surge led to heavy flooding of the area.

As part of the investigation and repair work it was necessary for workmen to dig down a further 1.2 m in the hole.

However the workmen could not find why the hole appeared and work to repair it was expected to carry on until this morning

Catherine Brookes, Highways Agency divisional director, said: “We have been working around the clock with our contractors to reopen the road as soon as it is safe to do so.

“We have been carrying out investigations, including CCTV surveys, and excavations, to determine the extent and nature of the hole and the appropriate repair.

“While we have not found a definite cause we are confident we have ascertained the extent of the hole and so have started that repair.

“This involves compacting several layers of material to reconstruct the road. We will then resurface it, allow it to cool and then repaint the road markings.

“This takes some time and we expect work to continue into tomorrow morning. We will keep road users and the local community updated.”

Denmark Road, between the A12 Station Square and the junction with Katwijk Way was closed and the A12 by the Bascule bridge remained open for traffic with diversions in place.
