The A12 has reopened after a pedestrian was killed in a collision with a number of vehicles early this morning.

Police had closed the road to carry out forensic investigations after the accident, which involved a man, who is thought to have been in his 20s.

It happened at about 3am on the northbound carriageway between Boreham and Hatfield Peveral, north of Chelmsford.

The northbound carriageway and one lane of the southbound carriageway were closed throughout rush hour, causing significant congestion for motorists.

A police spokesman said: “Essex Police would like to thank the public for their patience whilst the important forensic recovery work took place.”

Inspector Scott Egerton, of Essex Police Roads Policing Team, described the accident as “a tragic incident”.

The East of England Ambulance Service was called at 3.46am and paramedics were on scene in about four minutes,

“Very sadly, the patient was declared deceased at the scene,” a spokesman said.

Diversions were in place but motorists were asked to avoid the area if possible.

Any witnesses to the collision or anyone who can help with any information is asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on Essex Police 101 or email collisonappeal@essex.pnn.police.uk

  • "pedestrian killed in fatal accident" The word "fatal" is not required as "killed" means the same thing; it is tautology.

  • Because if that was your loved one you would want the police to do everything possible to discover what happened. And for the sake of people driving in that area being delayed late I think its worth it!

  • Iam no forensic expert but if a number of cars hit you that is how you died,so why close the road for all this time ?
