Rail services between Norwich and London are starting to run again after the mainline was blocked for more than two hours because of a bird strike.

Officials from Greater Anglia reported that the mainline between Norwich and Diss has been blocked because of a train hitting an obstruction on the line at around 2pm today.

It later emerged that the cause of the problem was a pigeon hitting the pantograph- the device that connects the train to the overhead powerline.

A spokesman for Greater Anglia said: “Train services between Diss and Norwich are being disrupted owing to one of our trains hitting a pigeon which has caused damage to the train. A safety inspection was carried out to ensure it is safe to operate trains over the line.

“Train services between Norwich Diss are returning to normal but some services may still be cancelled or delayed by up to 30 minutes at short notice. Disruption is expected until 11.59pm.”

First Capital Connect via Cambridge and London Underground will continue to accept Abellio Greater Anglia ticket holders reasonable routes until further notice.

  • More senseless comments from people who do not understand the workings of the overheads, it does not take much to damage overheads when something big or small strikes it, trains travelling at 100mph can cause plenty of damage with the pantograph broke until its stops

  • Is this a joke?! I have some guests coming from overseas in 7 days time. I would like them to come and see Norwich but feel embarrassed to suggest they take the train from London to Norwich. We cannot rely on this rail line. Hopeless!

  • Can someone clear the line of pigeons (and any other problems), so I can have a stress free day in London + no , I'm not publishing my journeys - to stop any chance of sabotage!!
