Update: Owner of two donkeys which strayed onto A12 found

Police in Essex have now found the owner of two donkeys found on the A12 near Witham in the early hours of this morning.

Motorists informed officers about the animals being on the London-bound carriageway at about 2.45am.

The donkeys were first seen in the middle of the road and then in bushes beside the carriageway – they were next to the road when police arrived.

Police briefly closed the road in both directions while the animals were loaded into a horsebox, which had come from a Chelmsford-based animal rescue service.

The owner, who does not want to be named, was out looking for them when he heard about their exploits on the news and has come forward to police. He thanked officers and the media for the safe return of the donkeys.
