Police were called to the A143, Wratting Road, in Haverhill, at 11.40am.

The road was closed both ways at Millfields Way. EDF engineers arrived at the scene but have since left as the cables belong to BT and Uk Power Networks.

Emergency repairs have been going on and a diversion operation was underway.

A BT spokesman said: “An engineer has been to site to make our plant safe we had two overhead phone/broadband cables brought down. We will need to return to site to replace these wires.”

A spokeswoman for UK Power Networks said: “UK Power Networks engineers are working to restore power to 22 customers in the Wratting Road area of Haverhill following third-party damage to the overhead electricity network.

“We had to isolate supply to these properties at around 12.45pm today following the incident.

“The company would like to reassure those affected that our engineers are working as quickly and as safely as possible to get the network back to its normal reliable state.”

A police spokeswoman said the road reopened at 1.20pm.
