RAIL commuters faced delays after trains to-and-from Suffolk were cancelled.

Greater Anglia scrapped numerous services last night because of speed restrictions imposed due to the snow.

Then, shortly before 8pm, further delays were caused by track problems at Haughley Junction.

It meant Ipswich-bound trains from Norwich and Bury St Edmunds were unable to get through.

Greater Anglia said disruption was expected until midnight, however by 8.45pm the lines had re-opened.

A spokeswoman for Network Rail said the emergency works were being carried out due to a broken rail between Stowmarket and Diss.

Engineers were sent to the site to carry out the emergency works.

A spokesman for the train operator, referring to the earlier speed restrictions, said: “In the event of adverse weather conditions we work closely with Network Rail to ensure we are able to provide our customers with the best possible service.

“As a result of [yesterday’s] weather forecast and as a precaution, some of our trains will be restricted to a 60 mph speed limit which will affect some services between London and Southend Victoria/Colchester/Ipswich and London and Cambridge in both directions.

“As a result of these speed restrictions we expect minor delays to occur to some of our services throughout the evening, however the vast majority of services are currently unaffected. We are working to minimise the extent of any delays as part of our efforts to provide a reliable train service.”

Greater Anglia this morning said they planned to run a full service, with no alterations planned.
