Police are appealing for witnesses to a five-car road crash near Marks Tey which left a woman in a critical condition in hospital.

The collision happened on the southbound carriageway of the A12 between Junctions 26-25 (Stanway – Marks Tey) yesterday afternoon when a black Honda Civic, a beige Nissan Note, a red Ford Probe, a blue Ford Focus and a black Audi A4 all struck each other.

One driver sustained minor injuries while another two were uninjured.

The driver of the Probe, a 69-year-old woman from Coggeshall, sustained serious head and chest injuries and was airlifted to Cambridgeshire’s Addenbrookes Hospital where she is currently in a critical, but stable condition.

Police earlier described her injuries as “life-threatening”.

A section of the road was closed for approximately six hours while the vehicles were recovered and forensic collision investigators tried to identify the cause of the crash. It was reopened at 11.45pm.
