A woman is fighting for her life in hospital after suffering serious injuries in a crash on an A14 slip road in Suffolk yesterday.

The woman, believed to be in her 50s, was cut free by firefighters from the wreckage of a two-vehicle collision between Stowmarket and Haughley at 4.20pm today before being airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

She sustained serious chest and head injuries and last night underwent a life-saving operation at the Cambridge hospital, a Suffolk Constabulary spokesman said.

An East of England Ambulance Service spokesman described her injuries as “potentially life-threatening”.

The collision took place on the A14 exit slip-road eastbound at the A1308 Stowmarket turn-off (junction 49).

It involved a black Lexus and a black Alfa Romeo. It is understood the seriously injured woman was a passenger in the Alfa Romeo.

Three other people suffered minor injuries.

Dave Grover, a paramedic officer for the EEAS who attended the incident, said: “A woman in her 50s was initially trapped inside a car and was quickly extricated thanks to our colleagues in the fire service.

“She had a life-threatening chest injury and was anaesthetised by crews before being flown to Addenbrooke’s Hospital for further treatment.”

The slip road was closed for several hours before reopening at around 7.30pm.

Officers are urging people who think they might have seen the black Lexus travelling on the A14 prior to, or at the time of, the incident to come forward. It is thought the car was travelling from Bury St Edmunds.
