A woman in her 20s has sustained life changing injuries after an acid-like substance was sprayed in her face in Pakefield.

Police were called to London Road South, in south Lowestoft at 8.20am by the ambulance service following reports a woman had received facial injuries after a substance was thrown in her face.

A witness has described the liquid being squirted from a sports style bottle, possibly a Lucozade bottle.

The woman has been taken to hospital by ambulance with face and neck injuries. An investigation was launched and searches of the area were carried out by officers with the use of the police helicopter.

Police later arrested a 38-year-old man in the town on suspicion of assault in relation to the incident. He has been taken to the Great Yarmouth Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service said: “An ambulance was called to a woman in her 20s at 8.15am.

“She had something sprayed in her face, which was reported as acid or something similar.”

He added that she had been taken to James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston, where her injuries are described as life changing.

An area along the road remains cordoned off while police continue with their enquiries and gather evidence. The area will need to remain cordoned off in order to professionally clear the area of the liquid.

Police are now warning people not to pick up any discarded sports bottles found in the area.

■Anyone who has information about this incident is asked to contact Lowestoft police on 101 quoting CAD 65 of 14/8/14 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
