Update: Women in life-threatening condition following crash at Eye

TWO women have suffered life-threatening injuries following a two-vehicle crash on the B1117 at Eye, near Cookley Farm.

The accident, which happened at about 4.20pm today in foggy conditions, involved a red Ford Fiesta and a green Toyota Corolla.

The driver of the Fiesta, a woman in her 40s, and a passenger, an 18-year-old woman, suffered life-threatening injuries and the Corolla driver – a man believed to be aged 70 – was said to be in shock.

All were taken to Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and the Fiesta driver was transferred to Papworth Hospital in Cambridgeshire.

Three fire appliances attended the scene and crews used hydraulic cutting gear to release the women who were trapped in the car.

A spokeswoman for the East of England Ambulance Service said: “Emergency crews worked very hard together to ensure they could be freed safely and treated as quickly as possible.”

She said the ambulance service was called just before 4.15pm and resources included three ambulances, the East Anglian Air Ambulance, paramedic officers and a response vehicle.

The driver of the Fiesta and her front-seat passenger both suffered fractures and the front-seat passenger also suffered facial injuries and was semi-conscious. The man, the driver of the Corolla, complained of chest pain.

The road had been closed at the junction of Cocks Road and Cookley Road, but had reopened by 9pm.
