The shooting took place at Sandy Hook School in Newtown.

The gunman is believed to have killed himself.

Two weapons have reportedly been recovered, and the state governor is on his way to the scene.

Schools across the district are on lock-down as a preventive measure, officials say.

Police arrived at the school soon after 9.40am local time (2.40pm GMT), with a full search of the site ongoing.

Meanwhile, the three people who have been taken to hospital are in “very serious condition”, Newtown Mayor Mark Boughton told CNN.

Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy is on his way to the scene, according to his Twitter account.

As the situation began, police received a call reporting that a gunman was in the school’s main office.

One witness speaking to CNN said that shots were heard coming from the hall. There “must have been 100 rounds” fired, she told the channel.

  • The one thing Americans do with more enthusiasm than killing non-Americans is killing each other. What an appalling country!
