Video: New tourism campaign aims to show you that there is a lot more to Ipswich than meets the eye

It might not have the reputation as the tourist jewel of the region, or even the county, but a new campaign is today being launched to show off Ipswich in a new light.
“I know a place . . .” has been launched by Ipswich Central in a bid to attract visitors and tourists to the town by showing off some of its finest features, while tantalising people by not revealing where they are at first.
The centrepiece of the campaign is a two-minute video that will be on our website at 9am today. It will then be used to promote the town across the region, including at independent cinemas in tourist hotspots.
The campaign also features still pictures taken around the town highlighting some of the attractive architecture, stunning features, or fantastic goods on sale.
Ipswich Central chairman Terry Baxter said it was an unashamed attempt at changing many people’s perceptions of the town – especially those who lived within easy distance but who rarely visited.
He said: “There is a view that perhaps Ipswich is not that exciting a place to visit, but we are very keen to show off another side of the town and hopefully attract more people.
“If you look at what the town has to offer, like the Waterfront and the St Peter’s Street area – not to mention great festivals like IP-Art it really does have a lot going for it.
“The challenge is to bring these people to Ipswich an give them a chance to see what the town has to offer, hopefully this campaign will do that.”
Ipswich council’s executive member for economic development Carole Jones was very enthusiastic about the new campaign.
“I think it’s a great idea. It is targeting exactly the right people. We need to go out to the people of Suffolk and tell them that things are getting better here.
“We need to persuade people across Suffolk that their county town is somewhere to be proud of and is well worth a visit.
“This will help to show them how Ipswich has changed and encourage them to come and see for themselves.”
The campaign has the backing of Ipswich MP Ben Gummer, who welcomed any attempt to change minds about the town.
He said: “There is a perception that Ipswich is not a great place, but people who come here find that it has much more to offer than they expect.
“It is certainly getting better, and Ipswich Central are doing exactly the right thing in trying to improve the view that people have of the town.
“The most important thing is to get visitors to come to Ipswich and spend their money here.”
