A suspected armed robbery took place at a town centre jewellers in Bury St Edmunds yesterday.

Police were called to Preston and Duckworth Jewellers following reports armed robbers had targeted the store on the Cornhill at around 5pm.

It is still not known what items have been taken or their value, but police said there were no reported injuries.

No arrests have been made.

A cordon was set-up throughout the evening while officers carried out an investigation.

The police helicopter was also called.

One witness at the scene, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “There were around three or four police vans parked outside.

“At least one police officer was inside dusting for fingerprints. The shutter was down on one side of the shop.”

It is also not known how many people carried out the theft, how they left the scene, or what weapons, if any, were used.

However, police said it is believed there was no threat to members of the public during the incident.

Police are also expected to provide an update on the investigation this morning after carrying out further investigations, a force spokesman said tonight.
