Richard and Cathy Brown discovered they had won the jackpot while moored in a marina in Newcastle as part of a trip around the UK on their 40ft yacht Brave.

After discovering their numbers had come in for the May 29 draw, the couple, who sail out of Levington marina, walked across the Millennium bridge and celebrated with a gin and tonic in a Newcastle bar.

Mr Brown said: “We tend to buy a month’s worth of tickets in our local Sainsbury’s for the Lotto draw.

“Before we set off on our adventure around Britain I had stocked up for the first month.

“As we were settling in for the evening in Newcastle, I decided to use the (Lotto) app I had downloaded as a bit of an experiment.

“Cathy was looking over my shoulder, first of all to see the app in action and then we both realised we had four, five, and then six of the numbers.

“I turned to my wife of 39 years and said ‘You’re a multi millionaire’.

“Despite our swift gin and tonic we are still reeling from that particular status.”

The couple won a total of £6,123,395 after picking winning numbers: 3, 5,25,33,34,35 and the bonus number of 14.

Mr Brown, 66, was deputy editor on the EADT and Star sub-editor while his 64-year-old wife was a features writer for the EADT.

Speaking at a press conference, Mrs Brown added: “We probably couldn’t spend this much in a lifetime so we’re looking forward to having a great deal of fun giving it to good causes.”

The couple, who do not have children, downsized their house to buy their current yacht and now hope to upgrade to a £350,000 model and possibly a new house.

  • It always seems to be old wealthy people who win the lottery. It's a bit of shame it wasn't won by someone who needed the money a bit more. If they can afford a 40 foot yacht I think they already have a pretty comfortable life.

  • It says that they downsized their house to pay for the yacht so I don't think they're that rich. Besides, they're no less deserving of the money than a poor family. Hope they enjoy spending their fortune.

  • Congratulations. I just wish the money had gone to a family who didn't already have the money to own a yacht. After all, it's those on lower incomes who spend more on the Lotto and scratchcards, as they try to get out of the low income trap they are kept in by the 'establishment'.
