TESCO will set-up shop in Walton after Tendring District Council’s (TDC) planning committee gave the superstore the green light.

The site in front of the Martello Caravan Park in Kirby Road will include a petrol station, car parking, servicing area, landscaping and a pedestrian footbridge.

The decision was deferred by the committee on January 10 for further talks with Tesco about the building design and to secure more funds as part of a section 106 agreement.

The contributions now include extra money for Walton town centre and public transport which amount to around £360,000.

Tesco also say the development will create 250 jobs and attract millions of pounds of investment.

Louise Gosling, from Tesco, said: “We’re absolutely delighted with the council’s decision to approve these plans. I’ve got to know many people living in the town over the past couple of years and many tell me they can’t wait for the improved shopping, petrol station and local jobs these plans will bring.”

However, the plans have caused controversy in the town, with some residents and councillors opposing the development.

Frinton and Walton Town Council objected to the proposals while Iris Johnson, district councillor for Frinton on the planning
committee, described the designs as insulting.

Due to the size of the development, the plans will be referred to the Secretary of State. They have 21 days to register any objections.
