Rural properties and farms in west Suffolk are being warned to take extra security measures after a series of thefts.

Farms and equestrian properties in West Row and Forest Heath have been targeted due to their remote locations, with thieves taking expensive electric fencing equipment and ripping batteries from vehicles.

In advice issued by police via Suffolk Horse Watch – a scheme designed to combat equine and rural crime –those in rural areas are even asked to consider purchasing electrified boxes capable of shocking would-be thieves to protect energiser equipment.

Farmers and those with electric fencing are advised, at the very least, to mark their energiser unit and batteries with their postcode by engraving or using an indelible marker pen.

Police are also warning people living in rural areas to pay more attention to their home security in daylight hours, following a number of daytime burglaries.

A spokesman for Suffolk Constabulary said: “If someone is hanging round a field and it doesn’t look like it’s a farmer, then please let us know because we would rather check it out and make sure it is legitimate.

“We would rather people contact us if they suspect suspicious activity and suspect a crime may be in progress.

“The same applies to day time burglaries as well. There have been a number of burglaries.

“We would ask members of the public to help us catch those responsible and if you see anything suspicious please alert us by phoning 999 immediately.”

Police have said to look out for people hanging around homes or going into gardens or onto property if you know they are not the householder and even report suspicious noises – like the sound of breaking glass.

Anyone with information about any break in or theft should call Suffolk Constabulary on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
