West Suffolk: Mimi’s charity festival set to inspire young entrepreneurs

A charity established in memory of a promising young designer who died following a snowboarding accident is holding a festival to highlight the work of similarly talented youngsters and help those seeking to start their own enterprises.
‘“Good Story” was set up early last year by the family of 26-year-old Mimi Watts, a talented clothing designer from Lavenham who was planning to launch her own business.
To date, the charity has raised £50,000, which it has used to help more than 20 young people aged between 18 and 30 with business mentoring and funding.
Leaders of the charity, including Mimi’s mother Nicky McAllister, have now organised the Good Story Festival of Creativity, to celebrate young creative entrepreneurship.
The event at The Highwaymans Gallery in Risby, near Bury St Edmunds, will showcase fledgling businesses the charity has supported over the past year, and will inspire others to follow their passion.
On Saturday, April 26, a series of lectures, seminars and one-to-one networking will take place for youngsters looking for advice on their business ideas. Then, on the Sunday, the festival will be open to the public and will feature 20 young stallholders selling everything from vintage- inspired fascinators to upcycled fashion, and smoothies made from reclaimed fruit and veg.
Mimi’s brother Rory Watts said the festival would shine a spotlight on exciting young creative talent.
He added: “We want to give others the opportunities that Mimi didn’t have, guiding them through their first steps of running a business and helping them with things like applying for funding.
“Saturday’s sessions will give creative young people lots of practical ideas, advice and inspiration from business leaders who have been there and done it.”

Sunday’s public event is open from 10am to 4pm and entry is free. Rory added: “We really hope shoppers will come out in force to take a look at the unique goods on sale and support our young people.”
