The woman charged with spearheading improvements to west Suffolk’s markets is already making her mark with a series of activities planned across the region this month.

The markets in Bury St Edmunds, Newmarket, Haverhill and Brandon will come alive with special activities as Sharon Fairweather starts sinking her teeth into her new role as West Suffolk’s markets development officer.

Miss Fairweather is widely credited with turning the Bury Christmas Fayre into the top tourist attraction it is today, with the annual event now attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors to the town.

But she has now switched her attention to having a similar impact on the area’s markets, and said she wants to make them into much more than a mere selection of stalls.

“The market is a reason to come to town. A lot of people shop online now, but the market is an attraction,” she said.

“It’s about working with what we have got at the markets and trying to improve what we have got.

“There’s other things that can be done in a market place that isn’t just having a market stall – that’s what we are trying to get through to the public.”

There will an egg hunt, bonnet making and characters in costume in Bury over the Easter weekend, while there will also be other signs of spring with gardening and plant stalls.

On Easter Saturday in Newmarket, there will be a selection of arts, crafts and collectables stalls for people to peruse, as well as a mini-farm, face painting and fairground rides.

Free chocolate eggs will be on offer at Brandon’s Thursday market on April 17 and 24, as well as a children’s funfair, to thank punters for supporting local trade.

The month’s activities close with a farmers’ market in Haverhill on Saturday, April 26.
