A new £9.5million leisure centre for Witham residents opens its doors to the public today.

Work on the facility, funded by Braintree District Council, began in Spring 2013.

The new centre includes a six lane 25 metre swimming pool and a learner pool with overlooking spectator area, a sauna and steam room, a 50 station gym with the latest equipment, new fitness studios with a brand new class programme, plus two squash courts with a moveable wall.

Built by contractors Barr Construction the centre, in Spinks Lane, will be run by providers Fusion Lifestyle.

Jo Beavis, district councillor for people and participation, said: “I’m very proud to be able to announce the opening of the new Witham Leisure Centre. This is an extremely exciting moment for the town and for the district, and one that is immensely fulfilling for everyone who has been involved in the project from start to finish.

“From the very beginning people in Witham have taken this project to heart, and we’ve had the privilege to work alongside so many groups in the town and beyond to ensure that the Leisure Centre meets a wide range of needs.

“The Bramston Sports Centre has served the town well but is no longer fit for purpose. The facilities in the Witham Leisure Centre are state-of-the-art and represent a huge leap forward, so we can continue to provide great services in an outstanding new site.

“Above all, we hope that the new centre becomes an important and much-loved resource for everyone in the community to enjoy and benefit from.”
