Tendring is gearing up to host the end of one stage of The Women’s Tour today, the start of the fifth and final stage on Sunday - and a whole race of it’s own.

Crowds will gather to watch the finish of stage three of The Women’s Tour in Clacton this afternoon, with the winner expected to cross the line on Marine Parade West from 1.20pm.

A sprint is also decided at Thorpe-le-Soken, earning the top riders vital points for the sprinter’s jersey.

Then on Sunday, the final stage of the race will sets off from Dovercourt.

And when the international athletes have left, attentions will turn to the annual Tour de Tendring.

More than 900 riders have already signed up to take part, a new record and more than 25% up on last year, with hundreds expected to join on the day.

Leaving the Dovercourt swimming pool at 10.30am, just half an hour after the professional riders, the amateur cyclists will set out on three different routes - one a gentle six-mile course, another covering 20-miles of the district and the most ambitious being a 60-mile track around the district.

A whole day of entertainment is planned at the Low Road site, featuring world record-holding freestyle footballers and basketballers as well as music, food and drink.

Mark Platt, councillor for tourism and events at Tendring District Council, said: “It promises to be a very special few days for the district and one which hopefully pull in many thousands of people.

“The Women’s Tour gives a real boost for our own Tour de Tendring which I am sure is why we have seen a rise in people signing up at this stage compared to last year.”

A cyclist rode through a red light and turned left while I was walking the dog this week. It was 6.20am, there was no other traffic so no risk but, officially, the cyclist had broken the law.
