Woodbridge’s Rock Barracks hosted a leg of the Army Cycling Union Inter Corps Road Race, with some 90 cyclists from units across the country completing a circuit of the camp, which is home to 23 Engineer Regiment (Air Assault).

The event, which included a 24-mile race for elite male and female riders and an 18-mile race for novices, was the third in a 10-race series which sees the Army’s corps race each other in a team contest - the pick of the riders going forward to represent the Army in the inter-services championship.

The men’s elite race was won for the Corps of Royal Engineers by Lance Corporal Ian Cullen of 29 EOD and Search Group, based at Wimbish, in Essex.

The 26-year-old said: “This is only my second year racing and I’m really proud to have won an elite race. Sport is very important in the Army and events like this manage to be both very competitive and very relaxed. You get to know fellow cyclists and everyone supports each other – until the race starts!

“I came back from a tour of Afghanistan in 2012 and decided to buy myself a bike to ride to work and progressed from there. I put in about 15 hours of structured training a week and my unit is very flexible about giving me the time to train and race.”
