Music connoisseurs with a taste for the eclectic can add Red Snapper to the offering of artists for a two-day festival in a riverside Suffolk town.

The jazz funk quartet are heading to the Woodbridge Art and Music Event to play with a diverse gathering of acts across August 9 and 10.

The London-based group began life in 1993 with three core members, separating to pursue individual projects in 2002 but returning to the studio six years later with Tom Challenger on saxophone.

For Red Snapper’s latest project, the band composed new music for a cult 70s African film, some of which they plan to perform in Woodbridge.

Founding member Ali Friend, who has also written, recorded and toured with Norfolk songwriter Beth Orton, performing with her at this year’s Glastonbury festival, said: “Hopefully it will be a great event. I’m hoping to stay in Woodbridge the following day and see some of the other artists.

“Half our set will probably be from the new album, Hyena. We re-scored the Senegalese film Touki Bouki and played it live about a dozen times. It was an amazing experience.”

Red Snapper join a line-up that includes British rapper Ty, Mercury Prize-nominated Polar Bear and indie rock band The Woodentops, as well as DJs The Reflex, Severino, Si Begg and event curator Ben Osborne, who said: “There’s been an unexpected sense of excitement building around the event, with a wide variety of people responding to the line-up, which is hugely gratifying.

“All the acts playing have been really positive and the support from the local community has been amazing, with local musicians, promoters, arts organisations, media and businesses contributing ideas and helping spread the word.”

Local acts include Bird Radio, Ben Hauke, The Intermission Project, Thomas J Spieght and Charlie Law.

A programme of art installations and exhibitions to be announced for the event, which takes place in Elmhurst Park, Market Hill and other venues around town.

Tickets are £15-£35 from The Riverside, The Fire Station cafe, or at woodbridgeartandmusic.weebly.com.
