Anthony Ogogo reveals talks with ‘Golden Boy Promotions’

TEN-TIME world champion Oscar De La Hoya has emerged as Anthony Ogogo’s latest suitor, as the Lowestoft middleweight mulls over a move to the professional ranks.

Ogogo, 24 today, won a bronze medal at the London Olympics and has held talks with a number of promoters. Should he turn professional, he will choose from five candidates.

De La Hoya, who won 39 of 45 professional fights during a glittering 16-year career, has since made a successful fist as a promoter and, under his Golden Boy Promotions tag, has worked with top names such as Ricky Hatton, Amir Khan and Bernard Hopkins.

Any offer from the 1992 Olympic gold medallist is likely to prove tempting for Ogogo. However, the prospect of going for gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics or even the 2020 Games could see the boxer remain in the unpaid ranks.

Ogogo’s current four-year deal with Great Britain Boxing is due to run out at the end of the year.

“I am facing a difficult decision but the propositions in front of me are attractive ones, so I am in a privliged position,” said Ogogo, who was also offered, but turned down, a lucrative deal to represent Great Britain in the newly-launched World Series of Boxing, shortly after the Olympics.

“I woke up the other morning to find I had received a personal email from Oscar De La Hoya, which is not something you expect to see every day.

“I have been in talks with Golden Boy chief executives for the past couple of months and when Oscar contacted me, he outlined to me how he could help me and how his company was set up to help boxers like myself.

“At the moment I am gathering information from every interested party, with the aim of making a decision in the next few weeks.”

The alternative would be to stay with Team GB and plot his qualification for Brazil in 2016.

“Another four years is a long cycle to commit to and the professional deal I am looking at is over five years,” added Ogogo.

“But if I did box in 2016 and potentially in 2020, there could possibly be a coaching role for me with the GB team.

“It would be difficult to walk away from the GB team.”

Ogogo took part in a question and answer session with students at Otley College yesterday.
