Anthony Wordsworth completes his switch to Ipswich Town

IPSWICH Town have confirmed the signing of midfielder Anthony Wordsworth from Essex neighbours Colchester United.

The 24-year-old playmaker has signed a two-and-a-half year deal, with the option of another year after that. The fee has been described as undisclosed, but is believed to be in the region of £200,000.

London-born Wordsworth came through the U’s youth academy and has made a name for himself in League One with his superb left-foot deliveries, both from open play and set-pieces.

Joe Dunne made him skipper at The Weston Homes Community Stadium when he took over last September, with the midfielder leaving the club just shy of his 200th appearance. He scored 35 goals during his time at the club.

“I’m obviously delighted to be here. It’s a big challenge and a big opportunity for me and I can’t wait to get going,” Wordsworth said.

“I had opportunities to move last January but this feels the right time and the right club to make that step up.

“I can remember playing here for Colchester in a pre-season game a few years back and looking around the place and thinking what a big club Ipswich is and now I’m relishing the opportunity I’ve got here.”

Wordsworth spent a few days training with Town at the start of the month and always hoped he’d be coming back.

“I was suspended for Colchester so took the opportunity to train with Ipswich and talk to the manager here,” he added.

“I felt the three days had gone well and I left my boots at the training ground hoping I would be going back there!

“There was talk of other clubs being interested in me but Ipswich was the only club that I wanted to join and I’m delighted I have been given the chance to show what I can do.”

He will go straight into Mick McCarthy’s squad for Saturday’s visit of Middlesbrough.

  • Rob, Frank, OT, can I ask you on the day of this positive signing what it is in fact that MM has done wrong (apart from give RS the soundbite to give him the new and, already boring, nickname). This is the Jan window where value is very low, we are in a less than perfect position, and loans are as near to perm signings as any team will get without clubs needing to risk their own finances or status. Just take a look at the list of transfers (from all teams) since the opening of the window and see how many or not loans or 'undisclosed'. Whether you or I like it or not, this is the way of the Jan transfer window. The summer will allow MM to prove whether he is worthy but following the last few years, and where we were when he took over, apart from his lack of loans quote (Hang onto that RS with all your might) what else where you expecting him to do than pull us away from the relegation battle as much as he has done (and yes we are not yet safe)

  • Of course he'll play; probably ahead of Hyam who, for all his effort, is clearly the weak link in our midfield. Sorry to say it but his time will come.

  • Now the question is ... will NO Loans actually play him... or will he dredge up yet more loans.

  • This is excellent news and just what the doctor ordered! It may take him time before he gels with the rest of his team mates but as Aaron Cresswell has proven, good quality always rises to the top!

  • Sorry if Im not overwhelmed with this latest loanee to add to all the others. Remember mccarthy said he will not go down that road of getting loanee players!!! As usual just hot air from this latest clown of a manager and then he lets an actual town player go in Scotland and he immediately makes an impact at his new club Barnsley. Never ending useless managers taken on by evans when will it end? when we are in the conference???

  • david peters - he may as you say well be poetry in motion - but as Rob says will we buck our recent trend & play him rather than the current crop of loanees ????????? My guess is he'll be wandering lonely as a cloud !!!
