Deben win second round of Suffolk Winter League

Woodbridge-based Deben Swimming Club took a squad of 22 swimmers to the second round of the Suffolk Winter League, hosted by Hadleigh Swimming Club, and won convincingly scoring 246 points in the process.

The evening saw some excellent racing against swimmers from opposing teams, with Deben swimmers producing some great times, many of which were new personal bests. Deben swimmers were placed first or second in all 40 events with both girls and boys teams winning convincingly.

For the girls, 10-year-old swimmers Minnie Wayman (35.56) and Alexa Eliff (40.37) achieved new PBs in the 50 free and 50 fly respectively.

More PBs came in the 100 fly where Abbie Webb, 13, recorded 1.14.46 and Annabelle Mace, 15, a time of 1.11.72.

Annabelle took first place in both her 100 fly events, while Caitlin Russell won the ppen 100 Back after going into the final turn in second place and coming up a clear metre ahead.

The boys also achieved several new PBs. Jensen Hoole, 10, swam a strong 47.47 in the 50 breast and Lewis Moore, 11, recorded 30.62 in the 50 free.

Harry Longbottom, 13, achieved two new PBs on the evening, swimming 1.15.35 in the 100 back and 1.16.50 in the 100 fly.

Also in the 100 Fly, Jack Brammer swam a new PB of 1:10.24 in the 14/15 age group and Rob Doig finished in 1:20.09 in the 100 breast.

Daniel Davies, 11, had a really strong second 25 on his 50 back to finish first, and in the open 100 back, Nick Elmer clawed the lead back to take the touch in an extremely tense race.

In the relay events, the senior girls’ medley team all swam fantastic legs, with perfect takeovers, culminating in a brave final leg from Annabel Towns to get the touch ahead of Leiston.

Nadia Mason swam a fantastic split of 32.78 in the junior girls’ free relay and also finished the final leg of the medley relay after hitting her head on the turn.
