Former Colchester United centre-half, George Elokobi, has today signed for Leyton Orient.

Cameroon-born defender Elokobi was offered a new contract by the U’s, when his contract expired at the end of last season, but the 31-year-old could not agree terms and so became a free agent this summer.

Leyton Orient, relegated to the National League at the end of last season, have therefore stepped in to snap up free agent Elokobi on a two- year deal.

Earlier in the day, the O’s also secured the services of U’s striker Macauley Bonne, who moved to Brisbane Road after passing a medical. The 21-year-old signed a two-year deal, for an undisclosed fee.

Elokobi initially moved to England at the age of 16 and, after two years at non-league Dulwich Hamlet, he moved to the U’s under then-manager Phil Parkinson in 2004.

Elokobi had four years with the U’s, operating as a left-back, before his move away to Wolves, and then later Nottingham Forest and Bristol City (both on loan), and then Oldham.

He returned to his beloved Colchester in 2015, and spent two more seasons with the U’s, including playing a key role in the Essex club’s move away from the relegation zone and within just one place of the League Two play-offs last season.
