Charlton v Ipswich: Our quality shone through.

Lee Martin believes a touch of class in the Ipswich Town ranks was the difference as the Blues brought some Boxing Day cheer to supporters with a 2-1 win at Charlton Athletic.

Goals from DJ Campbell – who had earlier missed a penalty – and Daryl Murphy, gave Town a comfortable 2-0 lead at the interval.

But Charlton hit back and Danny Haynes’ 72nd minute penalty set up a nervy finish that Ipswich’s defence passed with flying colours – to the delight of manager Mick McCarthy.

Martin, who amazingly had a hand in both Town goals and both penalties, said: “The manager said it can often be a scrappy affair in the Championship with just two or three bits of quality separating the two teams.

“That showed today, especially us in the first-half when we took our goals well and maybe could have had one or two more.

“We then showed a bit of resilience that we were missing in the first half of the season.

“Back then, we would have lost the match, but we hung on and the boys did brilliant in the end.”

Martin was tripped for the Blues penalty, which Campbell missed, before having a hand in the striker’s ninth goal in 15 games.

The former Charlton loanee then struck another knife in his former club when his shot was saved by Ben Hamer and Murphy fired the rebound in.

Martin’s incredible personal afternoon was then complete when he hacked down Chris Solly and Haynes gave the Addicks some hope from 12 yards.

Summing up his day, Martin admitted: “We missed a penalty but then we took our chances before the boys dug in during a scrappy second half.

“For our penalty, he caught me and it was definitely a penalty – and so was the one I gave away. Those two halves just sum up Championship football.”

  • A great win, just a pity the teams below us are also performing and following us up. Hope we manage three points on Saturday.
