Bury St Edmunds, fresh from a cracking win at Old Albanian last weekend, entertain Guernsey in their second National League Two South home match of the season at The Haberden this lunchtime (kick-off 1.30pm).

Jon Curry’s men suffered a 37-45 defeat in their first outing of the campaign, against Henley Hawks, who are now one of only three teams who have won both their matches at the start of the campaign.

But the Wolfpack came storming back last weekend, defending well and attacking with flair to post an impressive 39-27 against an Old Albanian side, relegated from the third tier last season, who had former Bury head coach Gavin Hogg at the helm.

“I wouldn’t say the first weekend was a wake-up call, because it was just a case of a new set of players learning to play with each other for the first time. It can take time to gel,” explained Curry.

“We weren’t necessarily a different side last weekend, but I thought we were excellent and played a lot of good stuff.

“We showed good resilience, and the most encouragement I took most from our first two matches was our willingness to fight all the way, for the whole game.

“Teams are still feeling their way, in this early part of the season. The league will take time to settle down.

“Guernsey may have lost the their first couple of games, but they will be a tough test because they scrummage very well and play a 10-man game. We will have to match that,” added Curry.

Second row forward Mike Graham went off early with a face injury last weekend, but he will start this afternoon. Today’s game is a 1.30pm kick-off to give Guernsey time to catch their plane home later that evening.

Guernsey began their campaign with a 59-5 defeat at Old Albanian, before losing 26-35 at home to Worthing last weekend.

This is the first of back-to-back home matches for Bury, with early leaders, Rams, due at The Haberden the following Saturday, September 22.
