Harry Redknapp is a ‘big draw’ – but that may not be enough for DJ Campbell

THE lure of being managed by Harry Redknapp will not alone be enough to convince DJ Campbell to remain at QPR and turn down a move to Ipswich Town.

The Blues’ top scorer will today take part in his first training session under Redknapp after returning to the Premier League’s basement club following a red-hot spell at Portman Road.

Town boss Mick McCarthy has wasted no time in offering Campbell a permanent contract and it is understood a provisional deal has been agreed with the West London club.

Campbell was bombed out of Loftus Road by former boss Mark Hughes, who didn’t include the hitman in his 25-man squad for the first half of the Premier League season.

Redknapp took over from Hughes in November and Campbell’s future at the club he supported as a boy might have changed – especially after the new QPR boss admitted he would have liked to have called upon the striker in the last few weeks.

But the striker said: “Harry is a big draw but I don’t look at things like that. Names and stuff like that don’t bother me any more – I’ve been there, done that.

“What I am looking at in this stage of my career is happiness and enjoying my football, wherever that is. I have been happy at Ipswich.

“I stand by my choice, it was right to come here – the club is going places. If everything is right, and I speak to my family, we will take it from there.”

Campbell is expected to start for QPR in their FA Cup third round tie against West Brom on Saturday and Town’s chances of signing him might be intrinsically linked with how he performs at Loftus Road.

If he plays a starring role in helping the confidence-hit club progress in the cup, then it might be enough to convince Redknapp he is the right man to spearhead the fight to stay in the top-flight.

Perversely, the form of the frontman, who scored 10 goals in 16 games to help Town move away from the relegation zone, may well have attracted other interest from within the Premier League and the higher echelons of the Championship.

Campbell added: “Football is funny. I am sure there will be other clubs wanting to do something. But the stage I am in my career, I want to play and be happy.”

Former Ipswich Town and Norwich City players have recounted their East Anglian derby memories ahead of Sunday’s clash between the sides at Portman Road.

Norwich City will ‘never, ever be a bigger club than Ipswich Town’, says Blues legend Ray Crawford.

Ipswich Town Ladies turned in another high class performance as they progressed to the second round of the Suffolk FA Women’s Cup with an 11-0 pasting of Walsham-le-Willows.

Norwich City striker Nelson Oliveira last night kicked off derby week with a shot at Ipswich Town – insisting the Canaries are a ‘better club’ than the Blues, and have ‘better players.’

Next Sunday’s derby now assumes even great significance after Saturday’s disappointing result at Bramall Lane, writes Northstander Terry Hunt.

The 2017/18 honeymoon period is well and truly over, the bubble has burst, normal service has resumed. Our beloved Ipswich are dropping back to where they belong – mid-table at best...

Consider this an East Anglian derby rallying cry.
