Henley Athletic boss keen to avoid final-day title showdown with Crane Sports

Henley Athletic joint-manager Sean Brown hopes his side can wrap up their first-ever Senior Division championship win, before hosting title rivals Crane Sports on the final day of the season.

Henley lead the table by five points and will secure the championship tomorrow if they win at Capel Plough and second-placed Achilles fail to beat Grundisburgh at home.

The top-two have three games left to play but if Henley lose, that could also open the door for Cranes who, with a game in hand, are 11 points behind the leaders.

Cranes will be out of the running if they fail to beat Bramford United, at home, and Brown hopes the title will be Henley’s by the time they host the defending champions on May 6.

“A lot of people will be looking to the game at Henley on May 6 hoping to see a final-day classic,” said Brown.

“I’d prefer to have won the league by then and we want to win at Capel and put ourselves in a position to try and win the title at home to Bramford.

“With all due respect to Grundisburgh, we expect Achilles to win on Saturday and to seal the title against Bramford at home would be a fairytale, as they stopped us winning promotion to the Senior Division a few years ago.

“It would stop the title going down to the wire, but there is an awful long way to go yet.”

Brown’s men have won each of their last 17 games, but he added: “We are determined but we are not getting carried away.

“We know we are in a fantastic position, the players are very focused and the likes of Danny George and Ross White have been done it before with Cranes.

“We’ve three very tough games left and Archie (Arnold, Capel manager) won’t be rolling out the red carpet for us.”

Second-bottom Westerfield can go to within two points of their opponents, Wenhaston, with a home win, while relegated Ipswich Athletic go to third-bottom Stanton.

East Bergholt host Felixstowe Harpers and Haughley visit Leiston St Margarets.

In Division One, leaders Sporting ‘87 go to AFC Hoxne, three points clear of Benhall St Mary who, with a game in hand, host Stowupland Falcons.

Claydon in third, four points off the top, go to Bacton United ‘89.

The future of Mick McCarthy and the direction of Ipswich Town cast a shadow over the final weeks of the season, but there are still plenty of issues to be sorted at Portman Road. ANDY WARREN takes a look

Two Ipswich Town stars will be looking to take a big step towards this summer’s World Cup over the next week while a host of younger players look to further their international careers.

Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has been impressed by Ipswich stopper Bartosz Bialkowski following his first call-up to the Polish national team.

Luton boss Nathan Jones is disappointed to lose the services of midfielder Flynn Downes due to international duty but is pleased to see the Ipswich Town youngster continue his development with England Under 19s.

Fighting for a place in England’s World Cup squad might be tough work for Burnley’s Nick Pope but it beats riding a milk float in the early hours of the morning.

Ipswich Town goalkeeper Michael Crowe was taken by surprise when he found out he had been called up for international duty, but is determined to learn as much as he can while away with the Wales squad.

Ipswich Town fans want to see young defender Josh Emmanuel given his chance in the first team next season.

Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy says Josh Emmanuel may be sent out on loan again next season.

Ipswich Town captain Luke Chambers hopes striker David McGoldrick has not played his last game for the club.

Season ticket prices, whether we’ll hear from owner Marcus Evans and manager Mick McCarthy’s future are the three big questions as Ipswich Town head into a two-week international break.
