Connor Wickham joins Sheffield Wednesday on loan

EX-IPSWICH Town striker Connor Wickham has joined Championship side Sheffield Wednesday on loan from Sunderland.
When the Blues sold the striker to for an initial £8.1m in the summer of 2011 they included a clause which stated that they would have first refusal should the Premier League club ever decide to loan him out.
However, Town decided not to make a move when Wearsiders boss Martin O’Neill– having signed Danny Graham for £5m in the transfer window – made the 19-year-old available when the ‘emergency’ loan window opened today.
Blues boss Mick McCarthy is happy with a strike force which is made up of David McGoldrick, Aaron Mclean, Daryl Murphy, Michael Chopra and Frank Nouble.
When quizzed about the possibility of Wickham returning to Portman Road on loan in the past, previous Blues boss Paul Jewell said the fact that the club would have to pay 75% of his wages was a problem.
Meanwhile, former Blues loanee striker DJ Campbell – who scored 10 goals in 17 games earlier in the season – has signed for Blackburn Rovers on loan. He is likely to line-up alongside another former Town striker, Jordan Rhodes, when the Blues play at Ewood Park tomorrow.

Wickham was always a good "prospect" but never really cut it as a real star at Town and as time has gone by he has, as suspected, never proved more than a good Championship player. He may mature in time but I think we will bless the day we got some £8m for him. Jordan Rhodes is a totally different player and despite what Mick says, is just about the worst thing [of many] that Roy Keane did to our club.

I honestly can't see what the fuss is all about? Truth is that this is just a story fed to the fans by the paper to 'stir it up a bit'! We got 8m for CW, good business, what he does now or in the future should not have anything to do with ITFC as far as I am concerned. We have to move forwards, not backwards, or sideways....that goes for DJ and Jordan, nothing is ever gained by dwelling on the recent past....which to my recollection was not particularly successful anyway...onwards and upwards ITFC! ged...let’s hope your medication arrives soon, your family and friends (if you have any?) have my deepest sympathy.

Ged Steroo as you're known on your EDP comment strings by your 'fans' (even they moan about your comments and you're one of them.) The money we got for CW was alot for an unproven raw talent who has not stepped up to the higher league like JR has. But why do we always have to assume that just because he played for us before, we automatically have to try and get them back, Keiron Dyer being another that we can do without despite the talk when he was looking to move. If we'd signed CW on loan, Ged would be saying how we'd signed another no hoper. So GedRob (same person), why don't you concentrate on whether your lot can get another massive point nearer safety!

Connor was a big-hearted lad when he played for us, strong and willing. And he got one or two cracking goals. But it was obvious he wasn't PL class and the £8m or so Keane got for him was one of his few good forays into the transfer market. Now Conor's down in a relegation dogfight back in the Championship. Probably the right level for him. Good luck to the lad. And Ged: how's that GCSE English coming along? If you focus on the grammar and don't fret about meaning you could be in line for a D.

Facts, Ged, are just something other people have to take note of, aren't they? McCarthy couldn't sign him if he wanted to, Town have already got 5 domestic loans. Amazed your lot didn't try and get him, but then who'd want to join them?

wonder what the truth is regarding D J Cambell, who was reportedly saying here on this web site that he was only looking for permanent deal,and loved his time at Ipswich, now hes going on 3 month loan to Blackburn to sit on the bench as hewill not be first choice !!!

Surely when the clause was inserted we would have known that loaning him back would have meant his wages were beyond us ????? Also we must have known that Wickham was likely to go out on loan but we chose to fill our quota of loanees before he was made available ??? Basically therefore we were never really interested in CW & all that remains to be seen is whether this was the right decision when he goes to another club.
