Two of Ipswich Town’s relegation rivals drew closer to Mick McCarthy’s side last night.

Former Town striker Jason Scotland scored his fifth goal in eight league games as Barnsley beat promotion-chasing Brighton at home to move within two points of the Blues with a game in hand.

Meanwhile Peterborough picked up an impressive point at Elland Road after going in front against hosts Leeds United.

Posh are now third from bottom – four points behind Ipswich, having played the same number of matches.

Barnsley breathed fresh life into their survival fight with a 2-1 victory which did further damage to Brighton’s stuttering play-off ambitions.

The Reds, who were beaten 5-0 by Manchester City in the FA Cup on Saturday, came into last night without a win in three league games and sitting bottom of the table.

Scotland, making his first league start for the club, gave them an early lead when he struck home following some powerful forward play and they then showed their mettle as they regained the lead, through Chris Dagnall’s penalty, just five minutes after Leonardo Ulloa had headed Brighton level on the hour mark.

Ulloa’s night ended in misery, though, as he saw a late penalty saved by Luke Steele as the hosts held on for a valuable win which lifts them out of the bottom three.

Sam Byram salvaged a 1-1 draw for Leeds but his side’s hopes of closing in on a play-off place ended in frustration as Peterborough made it three games unbeaten on their travels.

Leeds teenager Byram turned home his fourth goal of the season early in the second half to cancel out Dwight Gayle’s stunning opener for an impressive Peterborough side aiming to climb out of the bottom three.

But although Leeds pushed the visitors back for long periods after the break they were thwarted at every turn by a resolute defence in their bid to close to within three points of the top six.

  • Yorkshire Jewell has made many crass mistakes but releasing Scotland and getting in not one, not two but THREE duds in on loan is perhaps far more crass than anything Genuine Jewell did in his ruinous time at Offshore Investment FC. The gross error by No Loans was made infinitely worse by allowing the 'club' not even having the foresight to stop him from joining a competitor - effectively ensuring that Town are paying someone at another club to help get them relegated. Stupid is as stupid does.

  • @ old timer hindsight is a great thing but he did have many chances and would never have been a success if he stayed any longer. MM is certainly looking at younger players and Scotland would probably still not have got a look in. It was the best move for him and these goals are only because he did so. A new challenge and all.

  • Andrewredhotitfc et al. I was one of those calling for youth & have absolutely no problem with McGoldrick & Nouble being given preference if this proves to be the case. However I cannot see the point of bringing in McClean & paying his wages while releasing Jason & paying his contract up at the same time. This smacks of actually paying twice over for a lesser player - who we are not now using - while JS goes from strength to strength with his new club. The other thing that really annoys me is the mantra that JS didn't perform for Ipswich - while of course Chopra did 'rip up trees'. The goal scoring ratios are not a million miles apart - & as a team player Jason would have been well ahead on assists. I know which one I would have released - both on the grounds of performance & character !!

  • Good luck to him if he scores goals elsewhere. However I am not displeased we released him. Getting in younger players and giving them the chance for the future is a much better direction. People were crying out for youngsters and we now have some. They won't come in on fire but keep playing them and they will be part of a building team that can grow together. That is the best chance for the future.

  • While I agree we shouldn't have just paid him off to then walk into another club in direct competition with us, I still maintain it was the right decision, goals or no goals. Nouble and McGoldrick are longer term signings, and both the sort of younger player we should be signing. I know Scotland took a pay cut to stay, but why? Probably because no other clubs showed an interest in the six months between last January and the summer, and he had another year on the table at Portman Road. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but even if, god forbid, Town get relegated and Barnsley stay up, it won't be down to Scotland being let go; you've got Jewell's muddling at the start of the season to blame for that, should it happen.

  • Now face the facts here town supporters, Scotland at his previous clubs (town apart) and Barnsley could and cannot stop scoring goals while at town could hardly score any! Why is this ask yourselves? Very bad man management and tactics are the theme at portman road and thats why hardly any goals are scored this season. Keane, Jewell and now clown mccarthy have been made managers of town by evans and all are so bad at their job at hand it amazes me and Im lead to believe evans is also totally useless as an owner. With these clowns running the town, all fans can hope for is a dire fight against relegation every season.

  • Whether Scotland should still be in our team now is neither here nor there, it's the fact we let him join a rival which is incredible. Had we just re-employed him as a programme seller, we would now be twice as many points away from the bottom place. Blunder of the season, and that's no mean tag.

  • Well played Scotland! A player in the last phase of his career and still with something to offer, mis-used at Ipswich but prospering in Yorkshire. Those contributors who trot out the usual cliches (move on, get over it, put in a good shift, tear up trees and so on ad nauseam) might care to ponder why this is. Perhaps Ipswich's management was, and is, below standard and does not know how to best exploit the meagre playing assets at the 'club'.

  • You are right Old Timer, for a couple of seasons you and I have been extolling the virues of Jason, voices crying in the wilderness. Those daft commenters who point out he did nothing much before he was pushed out ignore the fact that he never got a run of games. Single handedly he has already put us nearer the drop. What fools some managers are, how clever others are.

  • Andrew - no Jason never 'tore up trees' at Ipswich - but there again who did ?? What he did do was put in good workmanlike performances - whenever given the chance - & therein lies the rub. 2 seperate managers never had the confidence in him to give him a decent run in the side in a set up where he could best use his abilities. We have heard McCarthy patting himself on the back for his very astute decision not to let Chopra go - on the basis of one meagre goal. We have not heard any comment whatsoever on his decision to actually pay off a player to enable him to join one of our closest rivals. Barnsley have shown a confidence in him & he has rewarded them with 5 goals - despite having only one full start. MM bemoaned our lack of goals yesterday - 2 in 7 games.Just think of the difference if we could have added Jasons 5 to that tally. What really annoys me is that he was committed to ITFC & actually took a pay cut to stay here - but was forced to leave by an influx of loanees who have not been of the same class as JS. I still hope I'm wrong but feel this decision will come back to haunt McCarthy.

  • For crying out loud, EADT; he's gone, get over it. Not so long ago the phrase "Dad's Army" was being used to describe the Town squad. Now the side is younger, hungrier and not all on daft money, and all you can bang on about is a player who hardly tore up trees when he was here. It's all well and good talking about the goals he's scoring at another club, but not one mention of the fact that his record at Town was nothing but average at best.
