LUKE Hyam has today signed a new one-year deal at Ipswich Town.
Fresh from his pivotal role in last night’s 5-1 win over West Ham, Hyam, who would have been out of contract in the summer, has penned a new deal with his hometown club.
Hyam said: “I’m delighted to have signed the new deal and now I’m looking to push on with Ipswich. It was disappointing to be out of the side earlier in the season, but I’ve worked hard and forced my way back into the team and I’d like to think I’ve been rewarded with this new contract.
“The manager has told me to carry on working hard and I’m looking to become a regular in the side now. I’m really enjoying my football at the minute and it’s great to be playing regularly for Ipswich.”
* See tomorrow’s EADT/Star for more on Hyam’s future

Seriously, do we have to listen to the same 7 or 8 "woe is me" moaning old gits on here, week in week out, no matter what the result for Ipswich. It was a good game, we did well, the older players included also did well: Edwards, Sonko (yes even on the deck) and Scotland when he came on. And surely we can calm down about Carson too, his recent performances have been quite tame. Talk a bout one swallow not making a summer!! He's got promise but he wasn't in the squad and we beat West Ham 5-1! I'm just looking forward to the next game with a team playing well and the chance to put the big R word out of my mind for at least a month!

IAS, I thought I made it clear it's not what PJ has done in the past, however woefully, it's how he does from now on. So let's wait and see and give him and the players the encouragement they need. Thank you, my last response to IAS!

Not having a go at you, John Burls, just watching in wonderment at your ability to conceive that all is well after one win. Has our defence suddenly become sturdy? Nope. Are our forwards looking like they will score in every match? After 1 game I think that is hard to summise. Do the players generally look totally knackered by 70 minutes in each match. Yep, completely- even against West Ham. Did we have around £50k of 1 weeks wages on the bench on Tuesday? Yep, a solid sign of previous Jewell ineptitude and another signpost for the trickle of Wickham's transfer cash being wasted away. I respect your keenness to support ITFC- I have that too- but ignoring the obvious does no good. Issues need to be confronted, not ignored and hoped they go away.

Good point Old Timer, let's hope PJ has at last seen how and who we should play in the future. As for I Am Spartacus, having a go at me but why, I largely agree with him, Hyam should have had at least a two year contract and goodness knows what's up with Carson, didn't he do a proper job cleaning the manager's shoes? But hoping that PJ has now seen the light, give him a little longer eh? What other team has won 5-1 against W.H.?

Great , great news- should have been 3 years. Now PJ go while you're on a high as Jim Magic. Grayson at Jobcentre 4 points off play-offs???

Excellent news. I hope he gets a better and longer deal early next season. That’s Hyam and Murray – but I don’t hold out much hope for Carson signing.

Signing Hyam is a solid action- as ever, something the fans demanded months ago and the 'Pros' have only just accepted. The concern is now Carson. When he was left out against Leeds Jewell said he was unlucky. After we lost against Leeds you might think he would come in.... nope. Not even a Sub. Is this Jewells way of showing Carson he will get fair opportunity? I think it is fair to say that Leadbitter will go at the end of the season along with Bowyer. I welcome the extension of Hyam (albeit for a measly year) but Jewell is just actively hacking Carson off. Stunning mis-ma-management. (Before John Burls comes on and suggests this is just being negative, I'm looking to the future and just hope intensely that future doesn't include Jewell. I'm tired of the obvious mistakes and the destruction of our youth set-up. I would accept losing regularly if we were blooding youngsters, but Jewell is still prefering loans (Murphy- however well he might play on the odd occasion) over our youths. Totally un-Ipswich)

I wonder why town were only willing to give Hyam a 1 year contract? Is it they think he wont make the progress required or is it a cost cutting venture? Which ever it is must be a non vote of confidence in yet another young player on the town books, to go with Rhodes etc. Now if Hyam was in his 30s I guess it would have been for longer, good old jewell keep the good work up. lol

Players like Hyam should be the bedrock of the club for years to come. Until there is a clutch of Ipswich players playing for Ipswich the club will continue to sink. The owners might want to see and sell off promising players such as Rhodes and Whickham asap - but somewhere along the way Town have lost the knack of producing players good enough to play - and stay.

How long is it we have been shouting for Jewell to give the boy a chance. Surely not a coincidence that the team appeared to have more enthusiasm and bite about it with him in. Shame our manager doesn't have the same confidence in some of our other young players. How long before this one goes out on loan I wonder??

Something off subject. I've just been on the EDP site (sad I know) and it seems that not one ITFC scribe bothers to comment thereon. Makes me wonder about the persistence of a number of Callow Rd followers who share their wit here. Also, none of these interlopers write on the EDP one. Despite present positions in the hierarchy of football, an inferiority complex? Still carry on lads - we need a chuckle in dark times.

Good news. Keep in the squad, don't send him out - makes no sense. Now get Carson signed up.

Not sure why only a one year deal - but he's signed so that's encouraging. The real question now has Jewell taken on board that it is the younger players who look like they will turn our season around. There is a certain irony in the fact that Hyam,Dury,Smith,Martin & ALB - all who have been treated badly by Jewell - may actually be the ones to save him his job ??????
