Wolves v Ipswich: IPSWICH Town manager Mick McCarthy says his side’s 2-0 win at Molineux has given him some closure.
The Blues boss spent almost six largely successful years as Wolves boss, guiding them to the Championship title and twice keeping them in the Premier League, before being sacked as the Midlands team again battled relegation towards the end of last season.
He was given a warm reception from home supporters upon his return both before and after the match today, with goals from Aaron Cresswell and DJ Campbell wrapping up a professional away victory.
“I’d be a liar if I said it didn’t mean something special, because it did,” said McCarthy.
“My last game here I had to leave through the back door – and I’ll never forget that. That was a real horrible day for me.
“To have won and to have had the applause and ovation was nice. I think it shows what most Wolves fans really thought of me, as supposed to the minority that made me leave through the back door.
“The ones that were singing ‘Mick McCarthy out’ are doing it for Stale (Solbakken) now. All I’ll say is, ‘be careful, you might get what you wish for.’
“That will be the lasting memory for me now though – being applauded off rather than leaving through the back door. Thank you to all of them that did that for me today.”
Ipswich are now eight points clear of the relegation zone and 10 points adrift of the top-six thanks to McCarthy’s impressive return of 23 points from a possible 33 as manager. He has masterminded victories in four of his seven away games.
“I thought we were excellent,” said the Blues boss. “I’m not bothered if Stan Cullis had been sat in the stands, he couldn’t have said that they deserved to win today.
“Even the staunchest Wolves player or supporter couldn’t say we didn’t deserve that today.
“The game plan worked – I thought it was a good performance. They worked so hard and the players deserve credit for that. They put a real shift in.”
