MANAGER’S REACTION: Subs won us the game at Bolton says Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy

Bolton v Ipswich: Mick McCarthy has hailed the impact of his three subs after Town’s fantastic 2-1 away win at Bolton.

The Blues boss opted for three attacking changes in the second half with Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, Daryl Murphy and Michael Chopra all introduced.

Murphy won the penalty from which DJ Campbell equalised and then Chopra popped up to win the game at the death.

A delighted McCarthy said after the game: “All three subs made an impact.

“It is lovely when subs go on and don’t have a big lip on because they have been on the bench. “I told them the other day when they go on they must try and change the game, win the game, save the game – and I think the three subs won the game for us.”

Explaining his trio of attacking changes, he added: “I wanted to win it. I was not going to put anyone on to try and shore things up – I don’t think I had anyone!

“We were doing alright and playing OK. It was fairly even and I thought lets try and win it. And as it turned out, we did.”

After falling behind to Mark Davies’ wonderful strike in the sixth minute, McCarthy praised his side for not capitulating in the manner of recent heavy defeats at Crystal Palace and Leicester City.

The manager said: “I am delighted with the win. The second half was much better. The first half was pretty bang ordinary from both sides, except an exceptional strike from Mark Davies.

“Other than that, I don’t think there was a lot in it – they were probably better than us in the first-half. But we stuck with it, managed to come in at 1-0, and had a good response in the second half.

“It wasn’t a good game – the first half was pretty awful – but I was just happy we didn’t come in any more down, and we could do something.

“We didn’t look like capitulating. I don’t know what happened at Palace and Leicester but it is not like the group of lads to be honest.

“They are good lads and they work hard, maybe they are just getting a bit more belief in what we are doing and being organised.”

  • MM gets the subs on at the time. It gives them a chance to get into the game. PJ always left it too late, no good after 80 minutes.

  • This has to be a good result for any real itfc supporter, however we still have 6 loan players who will go in Jan unless our owner puts his hand in his pocket, will this happen.

  • Still very early days under mm but I'm waiting for the usual negative claptrap of Steroo' and Scott. Steroo's probably still going through the thesaurus to pretend he uses words unknown to the rest of us. COYB.

  • At last!! A manager who knows when, and who, to substitute players in order to have a positive impact on the game. The spine of the team is also getting stronger. It's good to see a predominantly left footed central defender playing on the left of the central defensive partnership and a right footed player on the right. Missed Luke Hyam though.

  • Shame the powers that be took so long to get rid of that lame duck manager they had inflicted on us, ie Jewell. Giving the manager time is all very well but when its obvious to most fans that he was taking us nowhere he should have been ousted a year ago. Still at least we have a competent manager now and we really can make progress !
