POLL: Mick McCarthy hails the travelling support after Ipswich Town battle to 1-0 win at Yeovil Town

Yeovil v Ipswich: Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy hailed a huge travelling army of Blues fans following a hard fought 1-0 win at Yeovil.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

More than 1,000 Town supporters filled the terracing at Huish Park, Christophe Berra’s 40th minute goal sealing the Suffolk side’s first away win of 2014.

The battling performance was a vast improvement on the limp 2-0 defeat at Middlesbrough three days earlier and made another 250-mile journey home a lot more enjoyable.

“Fabulous wasn’t it?” said McCarthy, when asked about the Blues fans. “It was great that the players went across and gave them their deserved acclaim and applause for being here and supporting us.

“Everywhere is trek and this is a proper trek! I don’t know if it’s some badge of honour coming from Ipswich to Yeovil.

“This was more of an Ipswich-like performance tonight. We had to dig in because they (Yeovil) aren’t a bad side by any stretch of the imagination.

“I thought it was a solid performance. We probably just deserved it. I know we got away with one right at the end (when Yeovil hit the post), but we haven’t got away with many.

“It’s always nice to score from a corner. If you start looking around for our Player of the Season then he (Berra) has got to be up there. He’s been magnificent. He’s a proper centre-half Christophe.

“It was a hard fought match but that’s the Championship I’m afraid. If you don’t win the first balls in both boxes you’ll get beat, that’s for sure. We dealt with it most of the time apart from that one at the end.”

Ipswich remain ninth and four points adrift of the play-off places, top six rivals Reading and Brighton also victorious last night.

“Win one, lose one is better than drawing two isn’t it?” said McCarthy. “We can only win our game and concentrate on what we do. A nice 1-0 away win will make that journey back seem nicer.”

  • Cyril. You live in the past! Football has changed, the advent of the Premier League and the scum bag Richard Scudamore has changed it for the worst. It costs huge amounts of money to be successful now, the gap between the PL and the FL getting wider and wider. The money dripping down to the FL is peanuts compared to what Prem clubs are getting even after being relegated. So yes we should improve the academy try and get a core of youngsters, but the best ones will be poached anyway. Mick has done an amazing job with limited budget. He's not anti academy its not his fault that Hyam is the only one who came from the academy good enough at the moment. He's not going to not play Marriot just to spite all the pensioner fans in Churchman stand is he. Stop moaning and get behind the team on saturday.

Apart from the usual glory hunters who went for Liverpool, Man utd and later on Chelsea. (Man City now). You should support the local team. However as Suffolk is a pretty dull place and doesn't have a great deal of industry people move out to other parts of the coutnry. But real football fans do not switch teams they stick with the club. I live in Brighton go to most of the South eastLondon away games and quite a few home games (7 this season). I still have family in Suffolk so get back quite regularly. I'll be at the Wigan game also, everyone on this forum should also all be going including you Ray. Stop whining and get to the game, get behind the team be the 12th Jugador!! we need a result!

The FACT that the vast bulk of Town's support comes from well outside Ipswich has been known for decades and Sheepshanks merely confirmed what was already known with an absurd bit of market research that supported the FACT that only 20% of Town's support comes from Ipswich. Yes it is a stretch that therefore only 20% of the buffoons who went to Yeovil came from Ipswich... but then only 2 of the 10 Wrexham supporters at Braintree came from Wrexham - so this fact too supports my observation on the absurdity of the EADT's filler - and your incorrect opinion..

  • On the subject of the one eyed. When a player comes to the end of a contract it is either the players choice because he has lined up a better contract (Norris, McCauley etc) or it is the decision of a club which may have been relegated and knows it cannot continue with an expensive contract and have to release some of their best players. We have lost good players and gained good players because of this modern football phenomena in football commerce. Sometimes a club may not see potential with players and release them (Rhodes). Ergo it is a merry go round and if some arguments are carried through it makes all released players for whatever reason rejects in some peoples minds. Well if Skuse and Berra are rejects bring in some more Mick because they are two players who have got us where we are this season in comparison to previous campaigns.

But on the radio after the game the Yeovil manager said..."Ipswich were awful and we were even worse..." and I'm afraid he was right. This was a win and a win is a win but the football was dire long ball poor quality stuff that is never going to win a Championship let alone survival in the Premier League. We are still a long way from being genuine "contenders" and this sort of football will only defeat lowly teams.

Just a mish mash of cast outs and loanees and a very small smattering of class. We are a Country mile away from being good enough to take on the Liverpool's and Chelski's of this world. If and only if our beloved owner is prepared to back his ominous silence with hard readies will we achieve Premier status otherwise we will continue to bob up and down in this League for eternity and suffer yet another groundhog day next season and the season after.

It's a well known fact that you talk tosh as any bufoon can indeed see. You draw our attention to the a12 which is in fact part of the greater Ipswich area and still the other side of the country from Yeovil, which suggests that actaully quite a few fans did travel and some what undemines your argument (you make it so easy for me though). As for the a45 that runs south of wellingborough which is a catchment area for Norhamton, Posh, Cambs U, Kettering, Leicester, Coventy and Luton before Ipswich and it is again someway away from Yeovil. Furthermore if Town fans all live so far away then that offers an excllent explantion for the drop in gate numbers, something else you keep trying to hold up as evidence that fans are not happy. But wait if we all luve miles away it must be quite difficult to get to many home games. No matter how you look at it yoyu are undermining at least one of your own arguments (again), you really suck at forming a coherhant argument Steroo, learn to fail better and bring me a challenge. Hence it is very easy to say we will not make it and to later say I WAS RIGHT, WHAT A GENIUS I AM. That does not hide the fact that we do have a chance with limited help from ME but with a lot of hard work and endeavour.
